Solar atmospheric water generator (AWG)

Status: We are in the process of building the prototype.

The problem

Safe water is a basic human need, but for billions of people it is still out of reach. According to the World Health Organization (data from 2022), 2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water. Rural communities are hit hardest.

The idea

The air around us holds water. Even in dry regions, there is water vapor in the air. An atmospheric water generator (AWG) pulls that water out of the air. We are developing a low-cost atmospheric water generator powered by the sun, with no grid power needed and little maintenance.

How it works

• Solar panels power the electronics and the fans.
• The sun’s heat: We are going to use the sun’s heat directly in our prototype, so that all the free energy available is used to make water. The warmth helps release the moisture collected from the air.

Nothing moves except air, a few light flaps and slow fans. A small, low-cost controller reads temperature and humidity sensors and runs the daily schedule.

2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water in 2022. That is more than 1 in 4 people worldwide.

1.7 billion people use a drinking-water source contaminated with faeces (2022).

115 million collect untreated surface water from lakes, ponds and rivers. 292 million need more than 30 minutes per trip to collect water. Rural communities are hit hardest.

About 505,000 diarrhoeal deaths each year are estimated to be caused by contaminated drinking water. Most of them preventable.
